Out Skirts
When her girlfriend is kidnapped by bandits, Cordelia, a rugged cowgirl, sets out on a quest to rescue her lover. On her journey, she wanders into the small town of Oxgate and discovers a corrupt sheriff has been harassing patrons at the local lesbian saloon. Will she be able to save these sapphics, or will she fall short — losing a chance at reuniting with her soulmate in the process?

Where We Started
In 2018, Kelly Drake and Lani Kording produced a weekly radio drama show, Theatre in the Sound, for their college radio station WNYU 89.1 FM. They told all kinds of stories, from cult dramas to noir parodies to fantasy adventures. After spending countless hours over two years in that basement studio learning how to turn stage and film scripts into audio works, they developed an ear for a good story and a workflow to make them come to life.
What Came Next
Kelly and Lani always knew they would continue to tell stories together for years to come. After producing one-act plays at Theatre in the Sound for two years, the pair decided they wanted to take on a project with a bigger scope. And they knew whatever it was, it would have to be at least a little gay. Turns out, it was a little more than a little gay.
In part, Out Skirts is a response to the lack of variation in stories among queer-woman-centric media. We didn't want to make a Victorian drama that shows two repressed women exchanging longing looks for two hours only to build up to their pinkies brushing for a moment. Among our main characters is a bisexual woman, but she's definitely not a psychopathic man-eating serial killer. This is not a coming out story. None of our queer characters die, we promise.
This is not to put down any of those stories. Portrait of a Lady on Fire was a gorgeous film, we are the biggest Jennifer's Body fans out there, and we ugly cried when Lexa died in The 100. It's just that these stories have already been told. We want to put our queer women and non-binary characters in new and different roles, and dig into the interesting ways that kind of story could play out.
Where We're At Now
Currently, Out Skirts is in development. As we work to put these characters and this story to the page, we are seeking out creative collaborators and financial backers to help us realize this project's fullest potential.
We have never heard another story quite like this one, which is why we want to tell it.
Out Skirts will take you on a wild west journey you never expected to find yourself on, but one you can't stop listening to.
